A NOTE FROM OUR FOUNDERS
Throughout my first year of teaching, I struggled. It felt like I was missing a key ingredient —some secret sauce that would help me effectively manage my classes while engaging students and teaching the required standards.

After my first year, determined to find a better way to teach, I came across the idea of a classroom economy and decided to give it a try. The classroom economy created a “buy-in” for students and it was teaching a skill set I truly believed in, personal finance. My students became empowered community members and I regained control of my classroom.

Janessa & Tim
Soon after, I discovered there was a need for a more realistic banking experience that could scale with students’ development, starting with lower elementary and taking them up through high school and beyond. So my husband Tim and I decided to build it. We spent our nights and weekends creating the Stash101 platform (formerly PayGrade), after which we immediately put it to the test in the classroom. And students loved it. They loved applying for classroom jobs, earning and investing their virtual money, and spending some of their savings on real-life auction items. They loved learning about finances through a true-to-life simulation, and I loved how the classroom economy made managing my classroom so much easier.

Through word-of-mouth, teachers across the country began adopting the platform and configuring it to their classes’ unique needs.

Based on our experience and what we’ve heard from educators using the Stash101 platform, we believe more than ever that instituting this online classroom economy can transform students into money-smart community members.
